Distinguished and Famous people from Eurobodalla
🏉 Michael Weyman
Rugby-league forward Michael Weyman was born and educated in Moruya before progressing to professional football. After playing for Canberra, he joined St George Illawarra and became part of its 2010 premiership team. State of Origin selection for New South Wales and a Test appearance for Australia followed his rise at the Dragons. Moruya commemorates him with a statue near the swimming pool. His home-town recognition brings a major sporting career back to the district where his education and early football began.
🌿 Bob Brissenden
Built a house at Depot Beach in the early 1960s; its rainforest setting became important to his poetry and environmental concerns. With his wife Rosemary, he later edited The Gift of the Forest, a collection of poetry and photographs published by the Australian Conservation Foundation in 1982. The beach house was a retreat alongside his academic and literary life in Canberra. Its importance was more than a convenient coastal address: the surrounding forest entered the work itself. His local connection is a home and an enduring source of writing, rather than the setting of a single passing visit.
🏏 Lindsay Hassett
Lindsay Hassett moved to Batehaven after retiring from cricket broadcasting in 1981, making time for fishing and golf on the south coast. His earlier life had included leadership of Australia’s cricket team after Don Bradman, wartime service and a long commentary career. His playing years brought both accomplished batting and a reputation for humour and tact with teammates and opponents. Batehaven was a later home rather than the birthplace of that cricket career. It supplies the quieter closing chapter, when a voice familiar to listeners around Australia could turn its attention from Test matches to local leisure and family life.
